Rochester Bank Robber Mahoney Admits Guilt

ROCHESTER, NY – A brazen daylight robbery at an ESL Federal Credit Union on Merchants Road has landed Hugh Mahoney, 50, of Rochester, facing a potential two-decade prison sentence. Mahoney pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa, admitting to the August 22, 2022, heist.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles E. Moynihan, Mahoney walked into the credit union and slapped a demand note on the teller. The note, chillingly direct, read: “You are being robbed. 100, 50, 20, no dye packs.” The teller, complying with the threat, handed over approximately $3,260 in U.S. currency. Mahoney then made off with the cash, leaving behind a shaken staff and a quickly unfolding investigation.

The swift response of law enforcement brought Mahoney’s brief freedom to an end. Officers responding to the robbery quickly located a vehicle carrying the suspect. A matching hat and shirt – consistent with descriptions provided by witnesses – sealed Mahoney’s fate. While Mahoney confessed to being driven to the scene, he claimed the driver was unaware of his criminal intent. That excuse won’t likely sway Judge Siragusa.

The investigation, a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Darren Cox, and the Rochester Police Department, under Chief David Smith, moved quickly. Evidence gathered pointed directly to Mahoney, forcing the guilty plea. This wasn’t some amateur operation; Mahoney clearly thought he could get away with it.

Mahoney now faces a maximum possible penalty of 20 years in prison, alongside a hefty fine of $250,000. He will also be responsible for restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for June 1, 2023, at 9:15 a.m. before Judge Siragusa. Expect a full report from Grimy Times when the sentencing occurs.

This case serves as a stark reminder that federal agencies are actively pursuing and prosecuting those who prey on financial institutions and endanger the public. The streets of Rochester are a little safer tonight, thanks to the work of the FBI and RPD. But the question remains: who gave Mahoney the ride, and were they truly oblivious to his plans?
