Tampa, FL – In a stunning revelation from the Southern District of Florida United States District Court, Miami-Dade Detective Keenan Johnson (36, Tamarac) has been convicted by a federal jury on three counts of perjury for providing false testimony during an evidentiary hearing held before Chief Judge Cecilia Altonaga on April 4, 2022.
Johnson, who was a seasoned homicide detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department, now faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each of the three counts. His sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025, in Miami, following his indictment on July 31, 2024.
The trial revealed that Johnson had lied under oath on several occasions during a hearing related to a motion to suppress evidence. He denied owning a telephone number he had provided to a witness, denied speaking over the phone with the witness, and also denied receiving or sending text messages using the same number. Furthermore, he disavowed using the number on police flyers.
After the conclusion of the suppression hearing, Judge Altonaga instructed the prosecutor to investigate discrepancies surrounding the telephone number. Records discovered by investigators post-hearing indicated that Johnson had possessed the phone number for over four years, had contact with the witness in question, and made a call of more than 10 minutes using the number the night before the hearing. The number was subsequently deleted after the hearing.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Miami and the Miami-Dade County Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney E. Jackson Boggs Jr., appointed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, is handling the prosecution.
Boggs stated that his office is committed to upholding justice and ensuring that law enforcement personnel adhere to the highest standards of integrity. The conviction of Johnson serves as a stern reminder of the consequences faced by those who betray their public trust.
