BROOKLYN, NY – A grim morning turned into a night of terror when Bryan Oviedo, 32, was arrested for setting fire to a church and residential apartment building. The suspect, captured on surveillance video in distinctive garb, has been charged with multiple counts of arson.
Oviedo’s alleged spree occurred in the early hours of August 20, 2025, when he targeted over 20 buildings across Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights neighborhoods. One of his targets was a church at 520 Clinton Avenue, where flames caused substantial damage.
United States Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr., ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, and FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker announced the arrest, emphasizing their commitment to protecting New Yorkers and ensuring justice for the victims of these senseless acts.
NYPD Commissioner Tisch praised the quick response of law enforcement and firefighters, who risked their lives to contain the fires. “Our homes and houses of worship are sacred places,” she stated, “and we will not tolerate those who threaten them.”
FDNY Commissioner Tucker echoed this sentiment, thanking all agencies involved for a coordinated effort that led to Oviedo’s capture. “This dangerous perpetrator has been removed from our streets,” he said.
According to the complaint, if convicted, Oviedo faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment and a maximum of 20 years. Assistant United States Attorneys Andrew Reich and Andy Palacio are handling the prosecution.
