AI Tech Smuggled to China

⏱ 2 min read

NEW YORK, NY – Three men are facing federal charges after allegedly running a sophisticated operation to funnel cutting-edge American artificial intelligence technology to China. Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, a US citizen, and Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun, a Taiwanese national, were cuffed today in California. Their alleged accomplice, Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, also a Taiwanese citizen, is on the run.

According to federal prosecutors, the trio conspired to illegally export high-performance computer servers – packed with US-built AI chips – to customers in China. They allegedly used a maze of lies and shell companies to bypass strict US export controls, motivated by profit. The servers are reportedly worth billions, and authorities say the scheme represents a direct threat to national security.

“This wasn’t some slip-up; it was a systematic effort to skirt the law and pump money into China,” said US Attorney Jay Clayton. “We’re talking about sensitive technology that needs to be protected, and we’re going to aggressively pursue anyone who tries to steal it.”

The FBI says their investigation uncovered a sprawling network designed to hide the true destination of the servers. The case is now before Judge Edgardo Ramos in the Southern District of New York. Expect a full-blown legal battle, and a manhunt for Chang, who remains at large.
