Tampa, FL – Donald Reche Caldwell, a 35-year-old former NFL and University of Florida football player, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute the potent street drug ‘Molly’, also known as Ethylone, a Schedule I Controlled Substance.
According to the plea agreement, on May 13, 2014, Caldwell signed for and accepted a parcel containing 1.5 kilograms of Ethylone, which had been mailed to the United States from China. Just days later, investigators intercepted a second parcel in Atlanta, containing one kilogram of Ethylone, which was later revealed to have been mailed by Caldwell from Tampa on May 19, 2014.
As a positional isomer of Butylone, Ethylone is considered a Schedule I Controlled Substance, making it a serious offense. Caldwell faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison for his role in the ‘Molly’ conspiracy.
U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced the guilty plea, which was the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Assistant United States Attorney Carlton C. Gammons is handling the prosecution.
The case against Caldwell is a stark reminder of the dangers of the ‘Molly’ epidemic, which has been linked to numerous overdose deaths and hospitalizations in recent years. As a high-profile defendant, Caldwell’s conviction sends a strong message to those involved in the illicit trade.
While the investigation is ongoing, it is clear that Caldwell’s actions have had serious consequences, not only for himself but also for the community. His guilty plea is a step in the right direction towards justice and accountability.
Caldwell’s sentencing date has yet to be set, but he will face the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for his role in the ‘Molly’ conspiracy. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
