Altamont Man Sentenced For Child Pornography Offenses
A 24-year-old man from Altamont, Illinois has been sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for his involvement in identity theft, extortion, and child pornography offenses, according to the Southern District of Illinois Attorney’s Office.
Stephen B. Mislich, formerly of Altamont, was found guilty of stealing the online identity of a victim from Effingham County, Illinois, and then using that identity to extort and attempt to extort nude images and videos from several other victims in the area.
One of the victims was 16 years old at the time of the offense and the images Mislich forced her to produce constituted child pornography under federal law.
At his sentencing hearing, Acting United States Attorney James L. Porter noted that the court was ‘as concerned for these victims as we were’ and that Mislich’s actions were ‘deserving of the punishment meted out.’
The court also ordered Mislich to spend the rest of his life on Supervised Release and to pay a $2,000.00 fine in addition to the 20-year sentence.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Effingham Police Department, with the case being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas E. Leggans.
Mislich’s actions were described as ‘brutal’ and ‘involving the utter degradation and cyber rape of these victims.’ The case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of online crimes and the importance of protecting victims of cyber exploitation.
