Luke Braniff, a 26-year-old from Mason City, Iowa, was busted for possessing ammunition despite being a convicted sex offender. Braniff’s troubles began when he sent vulgar sexual messages to a minor female on Snapchat and asked for nude images. The incident occurred while he was already on the radar for previous convictions, including two counts of lascivious acts with a child in 2017 and multiple sex offender registry violations in 2018, 2023, and 2025.
Braniff’s plea hearing on March 3, 2026, revealed that he knowingly possessed ammunition, a clear violation of his status as a felon. This case falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The investigation led to Braniff’s sentencing to 108 months in federal prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. Braniff will be held in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service until he can be transported to a federal prison. With no parole in the federal system, Braniff will serve his full sentence.
