BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Demetrius McKinney, 45, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) McDowell, has been sentenced to one year and one month in prison for possessing a homemade weapon within federal prison walls. His sentence will be served consecutively to the term he is currently incarcerated.
Court documents reveal that on April 24, 2024, McKinney was involved in an incident at FCI McDowell. Following the disturbance, staff discovered a handcrafted weapon known as a ‘shank’ concealed in McKinney’s right front pants pocket. The shank measured approximately six and a half inches long, with one end sharpened to a point for lethal use and a cloth handle on the other.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the sentencing, commending the Federal Bureau of Prisons for their diligent investigative efforts. Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber presided over the hearing and imposed McKinney’s sentence. Assistant United States Attorneys Brian D. Parsons and Timothy D. Boggess handled the prosecution.
