Felon Sentenced to 68 Months for Gun Possession
A 25-year-old man from Henderson, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 68 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Cadarius Rasha Caldwell was sentenced by United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan on yesterday in federal court.
Caldwell was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition in an indictment filed on December 16, 2015. He pleaded guilty to the charge on February 18, 2016.
The case began on April 16, 2015, when an officer with the Oxford Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Caldwell after he failed to stop at a stop sign. Caldwell told the officer that he did not have a driver’s license.
Caldwell and a passenger were removed from the vehicle, and a subsequent search yielded an extended magazine underneath the driver’s seat. Officers then located a Glock 9mm handgun on the ground a few feet from the passenger side of the vehicle. The magazine in the car was a match to the firearm outside the car.
The case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified effort against gun crime. The investigation was conducted by the Oxford Police Department, the Henderson Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant United States Attorney S. Katherine Burnette prosecuted the case for the government. Caldwell will serve 3 years of supervised release after his imprisonment. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat gun crime and target repeat offenders who plague their communities.
