Giovanni Rosa, a 32-year-old Buffalo man, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute fentanyl in the Buffalo area between January and February 2025. Rosa worked with others to sell the deadly opioid, with investigators making three controlled purchases of fentanyl from him during that time. Each purchase was approximately an ounce of fentanyl, which Rosa would acquire from his source of supply.
The guilty plea is the result of an investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with assistance from the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership aimed at eliminating criminal cartels and transnational criminal organizations operating in the US.
Rosa faces a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and a fine of $5,000,000. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Garrett Fitzsimmons, with the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York leading the prosecution.
The investigation and guilty plea are part of a larger effort to combat the opioid epidemic in the US. Fentanyl is a highly addictive and deadly opioid, responsible for thousands of overdose deaths each year. The DEA and other law enforcement agencies are working to disrupt the supply chain and hold those responsible for distributing the drug accountable.
