GRIMY NEWS – Malcolm Whiteside, a 30-year-old Fitchburg native, has been sentenced to a staggering 9½ years in federal prison for his role in a dangerous firearms and drug trafficking operation. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin, led by Acting U.S. Attorney Chadwick M. Elgersma, announced the sentence.
Whiteside was found guilty on April 15, 2025, following a two-day jury trial. The charges stemmed from an August 12, 2024, incident where Whiteside led police on a high-speed chase in Madison before crashing into a semi-truck and fleeing to a local home improvement store’s parking lot.
Officers discovered a loaded firearm equipped with a Machinegun Conversion Device under the driver’s floormat. The illegal device allows a semi-automatic firearm to fire 50 rounds in four seconds, making it perilous even for experienced users. Whiteside’s DNA was also found on the firearm and plastic bag containing fentanyl.
Whiteside had been on federal supervised release for another firearms offense at the time of this crime. Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson revoked his supervision, adding an additional 1½ years to his sentence.
In addition to the firearm, officers found bags of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl in the abandoned vehicle. The judge highlighted Whiteside’s extensive criminal history, which included previous firearms offenses, as a significant factor in the sentencing decision.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the City of Monona Police Department, Madison Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative to reduce violent crime through coordinated efforts among state and federal law enforcement agencies.
