Evansville Postmaster Charged with Child Exploitation
Floyd M. Thompson, a 59-year-old postmaster from Evansville, Indiana, has been arrested and charged with possession and receiving child pornography.
According to a statement from Joseph H. Hogsett, the United States Attorney, Thompson was arrested on August 13 after an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Southern Indiana Child Exploitation Task Force.
The investigation began in June 2013, when an undercover member of the task force connected with a computer that was allegedly sharing sexually explicit images depicting young children. Investigators traced the online activity to Thompson’s home in Evansville and executed a search warrant.
A preliminary forensic examination of Thompson’s computer equipment allegedly revealed thousands of images and videos of child pornography depicting young girls between the ages of 3 and 12 years old.
Thompson faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted, as well as a lifetime term of supervised release and registration as a sex offender. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Hogsett’s office has launched Operation Community Watch, a new effort to reduce child abuse through innovative investigative techniques and aggressive prosecution. The operation aims to identify and charge individuals who engage in child exploitation in Hoosier communities.
