Tyron Young, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Missouri 2024

⏱ 2 min read

Tyron Young, a 37-year-old Kansas City, Missouri man, was sentenced to 115 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm. On November 20, 2024, officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at an apartment complex, where they found Young walking with what appeared to be a rifle. Young, a convicted felon with three prior felony offenses, was found to be in possession of a loaded Anderson Manufacturing, Model AM-15, multi-caliber pistol.

The incident began when an unknown male, later identified as Young, banged on the window of a residence and threatened to fight, holding a gun to the ground. Witnesses described the gun as a ‘black long gun, possibly an AR pistol.’ A police helicopter observed Young running through the complex, tossing the firearm underneath a vehicle before being detained by officers.

Young’s prior felony offenses include attempted robbery in the second degree, felon in possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad K. Kavanaugh prosecuting the case. The outcome marks a significant step towards making Kansas City neighborhoods safer, as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative launched in 2021.
