HULBERT, OK – A heated argument in Cherokee County spiraled into gunfire, landing 34-year-old Jeramey Dill of Hulbert with a decade-long federal prison sentence. Dill was sentenced to 120 months (10 years) for one count of Use, Carry, and Discharge of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced Friday.
The incident unfolded on May 3, 2021, when Dill allegedly pulled a handgun during a violent dispute and fired multiple shots, striking the victim in the leg. Thankfully, the injury wasn’t life-threatening, but Dill didn’t stick around to face the music, fleeing the scene before Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies arrived. Investigators quickly descended on the location, recovering several .40 caliber shell casings that painted a clear picture of the shooting.
The next day, investigators secured a search warrant for Dill’s residence and took him into custody. Facing mounting evidence, Dill reportedly confessed to the shooting. He later pleaded guilty to the federal offense on October 28, 2021, setting the stage for Friday’s sentencing hearing.
The case was a joint effort between the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant United States Attorney Ryan Bondura, successfully argued for a significant prison term, highlighting the seriousness of using a firearm during a violent act.
U.S. District Judge Charles B. Goodwin, presiding over the hearings in Oklahoma City, handed down the 120-month sentence. Dill will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal until he is transferred to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his time. The government framed the prosecution as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence nationwide.
The Department of Justice recently launched a renewed violent crime reduction strategy, focusing on community trust, support for local organizations, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. While this case represents one conviction, it underscores the federal commitment to tackling gun violence and holding offenders accountable. Dill’s decade behind bars sends a message that firearm-related violence will not be tolerated in Eastern Oklahoma.
