Douglas Marshall, Methylone Distribution Conspiracy, New York 2013

ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a stunning blow against the illicit drug trade, two Long Island men have been sentenced to substantial prison terms for their role in a methylone distribution conspiracy. The defendants, Douglas Marshall and Anthony Carlson, aged 25 each from Lindenhurst and Merrick respectively, have admitted to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute甲基酮,an analog of MDMA also known as ecstasy.

United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian, along with Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt of the DEA’s New York Division, announced the sentencing on Friday. Marshall and Carlson were arrested in Saratoga Springs on August 23, 2013, after selling one kilogram of methylone for $14,000 in cash. A subsequent search at Carlson’s Bellmore residence revealed an additional kilogram of methylone, cocaine, a scale, and two firearms.

Senior District Judge Thomas J. McAvoy sentenced Marshall to 21 months behind bars, fining him $5,000. Carlson, who was linked to the firearms seized during his arrest, received a harsher sentence of 29 months imprisonment and a fine of $5,000. Both men have also been ordered to serve three years of supervised release post-prison and must forfeit $15,000 in drug proceeds.

The investigation leading to this conviction was jointly conducted by the DEA and the Saratoga Springs Police Department, while Assistant United States Attorney Wayne A. Myers led the prosecution.

Marshall’s defense lawyer argued that his client had been coerced into participating in the crime. However, Judge McAvoy emphasized the serious nature of the offense and upheld the sentence. Carlson’s lawyer highlighted his client’s cooperation with authorities but the court remained firm on the severity of drug trafficking involving firearms.

This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the government’s commitment to tackling the drug crisis on Long Island and beyond, demonstrating that those who engage in such activities will face significant consequences.
