A Mexican national, Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, 45, was involved in a large-scale drug-trafficking conspiracy in Missouri, specifically distributing methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine. The operation was led by a co-defendant and included several members, including Lopez-Sanchez. On April 16, 2021, Lopez-Sanchez was observed arriving at a residence in Belton, Mo., where he was carrying a blue bag prior to an arranged controlled drug purchase. Later that day, law enforcement stopped his vehicle, a black 2015 GMC Yukon, and found 995 grams of cocaine and $58,601.

The investigation, which began in 2019, identified the co-defendant as the primary organizer of the drug trafficking organization. Lopez-Sanchez was sentenced to 10 years in prison without parole for conspiracy to distribute cocaine. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley K. Kavanaugh and was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, the Jackson County Drug Task Force, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

This prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force initiative, which aims to eliminate criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to identifying, investigating, and prosecuting these crimes.

The sentence handed down to Lopez-Sanchez reflects the seriousness of the crime and the efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in Missouri. The case highlights the importance of interagency collaboration in investigating and prosecuting complex crimes.
