New Orleans Man, Lam Nguyen, Sentenced for Theft of Government Funds
Lam Nguyen, age 40, a resident of New Orleans, was sentenced to four years’ probation in federal court by U.S. District Judge Stanwood R. Duval, Jr., for theft of government funds, announced U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente.
Nguyen was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $47,808 to the Social Security Administration.
Crime: Nguyen continued to receive social security benefit checks after his mother’s death, which should have terminated the benefits. He deposited the checks into his bank account and converted the funds to his personal use, knowing he was not entitled to receive them.
The case was investigated by the United States Social Security Administration-Office of Inspector General, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen.
According to court documents, Nguyen’s mother was receiving social security benefits before her death. When she passed away, these benefits should have ended, but Nguyen continued to receive the checks at his residence.
Nguyen’s actions resulted in a significant loss to the Social Security Administration, and his sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of theft of government funds.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect taxpayer dollars and bring those who commit theft of government funds to justice.
