GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A Niles, Ohio, man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of firearms, ammunition, and body armor. United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach announced the sentence, which was the culmination of a case that shook the local community.
Michael L. Green Jr., age 34, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a two-count indictment. On October 28, 2013, Green was found with a MAADI model RML rifle, a Ruger SR40 pistol, 97 rounds of ammunition for the rifle, and 16 rounds for the pistol. He also possessed body armor, all while being a convicted felon.
Green’s previous convictions included failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, burglary, and assault on a peace officer in Trumbull County, Ohio. Despite his violent felony record, he managed to evade capture for several years until the investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Warren Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer led the prosecution against Green, ensuring that justice was served. ‘The presence of illegal firearms and body armor in the hands of a felon is a clear threat to public safety,’ said Toepfer.
The Niles community expressed relief at the sentence, with many residents feeling a sense of closure to this case. The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences for those who violate firearms laws despite prior convictions.
