Preston Predator Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Distribution
PRESTON, CT – Joel Huntsman, 37, a resident of Preston, Connecticut, has confessed to the vile act of distributing child sex abuse material. The guilty plea, entered today before U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in New Haven, marks a significant, though grim, step in a case that began with a tip from the digital shadows.
The case unfolded after the Kik mobile messenger application flagged suspicious activity in June 2022. A CyberTip was submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), identifying a user – later confirmed as Huntsman, also known as “Jay Huntsman,” “Joel Feser,” and “Jay Blackburn” – as sharing disturbing images and videos. This wasn’t just passive viewing; Huntsman actively distributed this horrific content to another user on the platform.
Federal agents moved in on November 2, 2022, executing a court-authorized search of Huntsman’s residence. The raid yielded multiple electronic devices, including two mobile phones. A forensic analysis of these phones quickly confirmed the worst: they were packed with child sex abuse images and videos. The sheer volume of material speaks to the depravity of the defendant’s actions.
Huntsman was taken into custody on January 26, 2023, and has remained detained ever since. Today’s guilty plea centers around the charge of distribution of child pornography, a federal offense carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of five years behind bars. The maximum penalty is a staggering 20 years. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled, but the judge will undoubtedly consider the severity of the crime when handing down a punishment.
This investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Connecticut State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel E. Cummings and Nancy V. Gifford are prosecuting the case. This prosecution is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative, a nationwide program dedicated to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation. Anyone with information about child exploitation is urged to report it immediately through CyberTip at https://report.cybertip.org/.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing. The details of this crime serve as a stark reminder of the predators lurking in the digital world and the importance of vigilance and reporting.
