PORTLAND, Ore.—In a stark reminder of the ongoing war against child exploitation, David Lee Cannon, 36, of Portland, Oregon, was sentenced to federal prison for possession of over 200 images of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Cannon, already a registered sex offender following a 2009 conviction for CSAM, was handed down a 120-month sentence and a life term of supervised release by the court.
The revelation of Cannon’s criminal activities came to light in February 2024 when law enforcement officials investigating his uncle stumbled upon the illicit material. Cannon sought the images through Telegram, an encrypted messaging platform. A subsequent search of his devices uncovered additional CSAM.
Scott E. Bradford, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, emphasized the severity of the crime: “The pursuit of individuals who exploit and abuse children is our highest priority,” he said. “Mr. Cannon will spend the next 10 years behind bars, unable to victimize any other children.”
April Miller, acting Special Agent in Charge for U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Seattle, highlighted the agency’s dedication to tackling such cases: “Our unwavering commitment is to protect the most vulnerable and ensure that those who prey on children are held accountable,” she stated.
Cannon was apprehended in Milwaukie, Oregon, following a cellphone tracking operation by HSI agents. He pleaded guilty to Possession of Child Pornography on June 26, 2025. The investigation leading to his conviction was conducted by HSI with assistance from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mira Chernick and Paul Maloney.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information on this critical effort, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
