Olvin Javier Velasquez-Maldonado, a 40-year-old Honduran national, was sentenced to over four years in prison for his role in a scheme to smuggle nearly two dozen illegal aliens and 24 kilograms of cocaine into the United States. The smuggling attempt occurred in February 2022, when Velasquez-Maldonado and his co-conspirators tried to bring the aliens and cocaine from Utila, Honduras, to Cocodrie, Louisiana, aboard a sportfishing vessel. Many of the aliens paid up to $20,000 to be smuggled into the United States.
The defendant and his co-conspirators flagrantly violated federal immigration and controlled substances laws, putting the safety and welfare of communities at risk. The successful prosecution and sentencing of Velasquez-Maldonado send a clear message that those who engage in human smuggling and drug trafficking will be held accountable for their actions.
Velasquez-Maldonado conspired with at least six others to bring cocaine from Honduras to the United States. The case highlights the often-overlapping nature of human smuggling and the drug trade. The extradition of Velasquez-Maldonado from Honduras and his subsequent sentencing demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combating these crimes.
The sentencing is the result of a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, including the DOJ and FBI. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of continued collaboration and vigilance in combating human smuggling and drug trafficking.
