Hacking into Veterans’ Records Lands Local Man in Jail

A 40-year-old man from Huntington, West Virginia has been sentenced to six months in prison for illegally accessing the medical records of six veterans. Jeffrey Miller, a former employee of the Veterans Benefits Administration, was also sentenced to one year of supervised release.

According to court documents, Miller admitted to accessing the medical records of the veterans between January and May of 2018. He even took a picture of the medical records of former West Virginia State Senator Richard Ojeda and sent it to an acquaintance.

Miller’s actions are a clear violation of the trust placed in him as a VA employee. ‘We must protect our veterans,’ said United States Attorney Mike Stuart. ‘Medical records are protected information and veterans have an expectation and right of privacy. We will prosecute anyone who violates our veterans.’

The investigation into Miller’s actions was conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers presided over the hearing, while Assistant United States Attorney Stefan Hasselblad handled the prosecution.

Miller’s actions have sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing outrage and disappointment at his betrayal of trust. As one local resident noted, ‘This is a betrayal of the highest order. Veterans have given so much to our country, and for someone to exploit that trust is just unacceptable.’

The sentencing of Miller serves as a reminder that those who abuse their positions of power will be held accountable. It is a message that will be echoed throughout the community, and one that will serve as a deterrent to others who would seek to exploit the trust placed in them.

As the investigation into Miller’s actions continues, it is clear that the community will be watching closely to ensure that justice is served. With the sentencing of Miller, one step has been taken towards protecting the veterans who have been victimized by his actions.
