Giovanni Mazzone, ATM Card Theft, Arizona 2024

FORT WAYNE – A trio of ATM card thieves found themselves behind bars after United States District Court Chief Judge Holly A. Brady handed down sentences, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.

Giovanni Mazzone, 34, from Gilbert, AZ; Lucian Neagu, 32, of Fullerton, CA; and Julian Dumbrava, 36, of Baytown, TX, were sentenced to time served and one year of supervised release after admitting guilt in access device fraud.

Documents revealed that in October 2023, the defendants possessed devices designed to steal ATM card information. These shimming and skimming gadgets, often accompanied by cameras, are used to capture card details and PIN numbers, allowing fraudsters to create counterfeit cards and siphon off funds.

The fraudulent scheme exploited unsuspecting customers as they conducted their transactions. The authorities advise the public to be vigilant for anything unusual at ATMs and to shield their hands while entering PINs.

This case was a result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Indiana State Police, and the Huntington Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Lesley Miller-Lowery handled the prosecution.

With these convictions, law enforcement reiterates its commitment to protecting consumers from such criminal activities and stresses the importance of public awareness in preventing future fraud attempts.
