DALTON, OH – Ryan P. Collins, 31, of Dalton, Ohio, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on counts of receiving, distributing, and possessing child pornography. The indictment, unsealed today, alleges a disturbing pattern of activity spanning several months.
According to a statement released by Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, the alleged crimes occurred between November 17, 2012, and February 28, 2013. Collins is accused of knowingly receiving and distributing numerous computer files containing visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, all transmitted via interstate and foreign commerce.
The indictment details that Collins allegedly utilized a computer to both receive and disseminate these illegal files. Furthermore, on February 28, 2013, authorities reportedly discovered a computer in Collins’ possession containing additional child pornography. The specific number of files and the nature of the depictions have not been publicly released.
Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan is prosecuting the case, which was the result of a joint investigation by the Canton Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Canton Police Department. Federal investigators reportedly uncovered the evidence through methods not yet disclosed.
If convicted, Collins faces a sentence determined by the court after consideration of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. These guidelines take into account factors such as prior criminal record, the defendant’s role in the offense, and the specific characteristics of the violation. While the statutory maximum sentence remains undisclosed, prosecutors indicated the final sentence will likely be less than the maximum allowable by law.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Collins is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a full and fair trial where the government bears the burden of proof. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
