A convicted felon linked to a murder in the Dominican Republic was sprung from a Rhode Island jail last week, sparking a heated dispute between US authorities and local law enforcement.
Bryan Rafael Gomez, 35, had been serving time for a 2011 conviction in Rhode Island when he filed a habeas petition seeking his release. US District Judge Melissa DuBose granted the request, claiming she was unaware Gomez was wanted in the Dominican Republic for a homicide probe.
But US Attorney Charles C. Calenda fired back in a statement, saying the judge’s decision was made without knowledge of the Dominican warrant.
The US DOJ has since filed a Court’s Order to Show Cause, which the agency attached to their statement.
Gomez’s release has sparked outrage in the Dominican Republic, where authorities had issued an arrest warrant for his alleged role in the murder.
