MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma has dropped a heavy hammer on 25-year-old Ryan John Capps. Today, a federal jury convicted him of a litany of sex crimes committed against a minor.

Capps, a former teacher and coach at Durant Middle School, was found guilty of coercion and enticement, sexual exploitation of a child, and sexual abuse of a minor in Indian Country. The trial concluded on May 1, 2024, with Capps’s conviction on all charges.

The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Capps, while employed at Durant Middle School, targeted a vulnerable minor in Bryan County. The investigation was a joint effort between the Durant Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The Honorable Ronald A. White presided over the trial, ensuring justice would be served. Capps’s sentencing is pending, following the completion of a presentence report. Until then, he remains in the custody of the United States Marshal.

Assistant United States Attorneys Jessie K. Pippin and Jessica Bove represented the United States in this pivotal case, which has rocked the Durant community.

Capps’s conviction is a stark reminder of the severity of sex crimes committed within educational institutions and the relentless pursuit of justice by federal law enforcement agencies.
