Emilio Garcia-Cappas, a 29-year-old from Springfield, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking ring. Between February 5, 2024, and February 22, 2024, Garcia-Cappas conspired to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, selling the deadly opioid to undercover law enforcement on three separate occasions. The trafficking occurred in Springfield, with Garcia-Cappas and his co-conspirators peddling their wares to unsuspecting buyers.
Garcia-Cappas pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and one count of distribution of and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl in April 2026. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2024, and his sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Todd E. Newhouse and Thomas A. Barnico, Jr. prosecuted the case, which was announced by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Jarod Forget, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA.
Garcia-Cappas’s sentence includes six years of supervised release, which will begin after he completes his four-year prison term. The sentence is a significant blow to fentanyl trafficking in the Springfield area, where the opioid epidemic has taken a devastating toll on communities.
