A 36-year-old Sioux City man is facing life behind bars after a high-speed chase and crash that left a stash of methamphetamine scattered on the side of the road. Shelton Lapointe was convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possessing with intent to distribute the deadly drug.
The chaos unfolded on July 17, 2024, at the WinnaVegas Casino, where agents were conducting surveillance. A vehicle Lapointe was driving took off at speeds reaching 140 mph as law enforcement tried to pull him over. In a desperate bid to ditch the evidence, Lapointe handed his co-conspirator a package of methamphetamine and told him to throw it out the window.
Agents seized the methamphetamine, weighing in at approximately half a pound, and arrested Lapointe and his co-conspirator. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Five co-conspirators testified against Lapointe, revealing a months-long methamphetamine trafficking operation that netted multiple pounds of the deadly drug.
Lapointe’s history of methamphetamine-related crimes dates back to 2018, when he was convicted of possession with intent to deliver. He was convicted again in 2022 for the same crime.
