Marcquece Petties, Marijuana & Firearms, Omaha NE, 2023

OMAHA, NE – Marcquece R. Petties, 34, is headed to federal prison for over 15 years after admitting to running a substantial marijuana operation and illegally acquiring firearms, according to court documents unsealed Thursday. Petties was sentenced on February 16, 2023, by Chief United States District Court Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. to 188 months’ imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release. Forget parole – there’s none in the federal system.

The feds say Petties conspired with others to move between 400 and 700 kilograms of marijuana between May 2019 and October 2021. That’s a serious volume, enough to flood the streets and line pockets. But Petties didn’t stop at drugs. Between August 2020 and March 2021, he allegedly used a “confederate” – a buddy willing to break the law – to purchase three handguns on his behalf. A convicted felon, Petties knew he was prohibited from owning a firearm himself.

This wasn’t a first offense. The sentencing judge designated Petties a “Career Offender” under federal guidelines, meaning his prior convictions for both a felony crime of violence and drug trafficking significantly upped the ante. The feds don’t mess around with repeat offenders, especially those mixing drugs and guns.

The bust wasn’t just about putting Petties behind bars. Authorities seized and forfeited a considerable amount of his ill-gotten gains: $6,310 in cash, a gold Rolex watch, a diamond-encrusted necklace, and a 2019 Audi Q8. It’s a clear message – trafficking carries a high cost, and the feds will come for your assets.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Omaha Police Department. The ATF’s Kansas City Field Division spearheaded the federal probe. U.S. Attorney Steven Russell of the District of Nebraska prosecuted the case. This case serves as a reminder that large-scale drug operations and illegal gun trafficking will be aggressively pursued by federal law enforcement.

Petties pleaded guilty in October 2022 to Conspiracy to Distribute 100 Kilograms or More of Marijuana and to False Statement During Purchase of Firearm (straw purchase). He’ll have plenty of time to reflect on those decisions over the next 15 years and beyond.
