Shots rang out at Dayton’s downtown RTA bus hub on September 26, 2025, as a chaotic morning commute turned deadly. Surveillance video showed James Thomas Hurt, 25, being attacked before he returned fire, allegedly leaving behind a discarded machinegun in a trash can.
Dayton police officers found the firearm, but Hurt wasn’t done yet. He allegedly returned to the trash can, only to find it had been seized. Additional evidence, including ammunition and machinegun conversion devices, was buried nearby.
When Hurt was arrested the next evening, he was in possession of 10 suspected machinegun conversion devices.
James Thomas Hurt faces up to 10 years in prison for the illegal possession of a machinegun. The charges are the result of a joint investigation between the ATF and Dayton Police Department.
