Willoughby Hills Man Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for False Tax Returns
A Willoughby Hills man has been sentenced to prison for filing false tax returns, underreporting his income by a staggering $139,434. Alexander J. Cucu, 41, was handed down an 18-month sentence for his crimes.
Cucu filed false tax returns in 2008, 2009 and 2010, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. The false returns were a deliberate attempt by Cucu to evade paying his fair share of taxes.
But Cucu’s scheme was eventually uncovered by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations, which launched a thorough investigation into his financial dealings. The case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark S. Bennett, who worked tirelessly to bring Cucu to justice.
Cucu pleaded guilty to three counts of filing false tax returns last year, and his sentence was handed down as a result. The 18-month prison sentence is a stark reminder that tax evasion will not be tolerated in our community.
