Columbia, S.C. — In a stunning reversal of fortune, William Justin Marshall, 43, has been sentenced to a decade in federal prison for his role in a major drug trafficking scheme.
Marshall was nailed after a high-stakes traffic stop turned into a full-blown drug bust. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputy spotted something fishy and K-9 units were brought in. What they found inside Marshall’s vehicle was nothing short of alarming: digital scales, white powder residue, and field-test positive for crack cocaine.
But the case took an unexpected turn when Marshall became increasingly combative during processing. He claimed health issues and demanded a hospital visit. It was there that police discovered multiple bags filled with fentanyl, crack cocaine, cocaine, and methamphetamine hidden in his shoes.
The judge’s decision to sentence Marshall to 120 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release, leaves no room for parole in the federal system.
This case has been a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney William K. Witherspoon handled the prosecution with a relentless pursuit of justice.
Marshall’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in South Carolina and the lengths law enforcement will go to protect citizens from the dangerous effects of illegal substances.
