Apopka, Florida resident Xin Liu, 40, has pleaded guilty to a brazen scheme that left a trail of financial devastation in its wake. Xin Liu, a Chinese national, was found guilty of conspiring to commit wire fraud against elderly victims throughout Florida.
According to sources within the DOJ USAO Arizona, Xin Liu orchestrated a complex web of deceit, swindling unsuspecting seniors out of thousands of dollars. The victims, many of whom were living on fixed incomes, were targeted by Liu’s associates, who posed as utility company representatives or other trusted authorities.
Once the victims had fallen prey to the scammers’ lies, Xin Liu would swoop in, collecting the ill-gotten gains and laundering the money through various channels. The defendant’s scheme, which began in 2019, would eventually net her over $200,000 in stolen cash.
As part of her plea deal, Xin Liu has agreed to forfeit a significant portion of the stolen funds. In addition to the financial penalty, the defendant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Xin Liu’s sentencing is scheduled to take place in the coming months.
The case against Xin Liu serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of elder fraud in our communities. As our population ages, the vulnerability of seniors to these types of scams only increases. It’s imperative that we remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Xin Liu’s guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement and serves as a warning to would-be scammers. Those who engage in these despicable crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
