New York – In a stern warning, New York Attorney General Letitia James has flagged businesses for price gouging on eggs and poultry during the ongoing bird flu crisis. The outbreak has created shortages and driven up prices, prompting the state’s top legal official to remind enterprises that they cannot exploit consumers in times of emergency.
“Eggs are a basic necessity for families,” said Attorney General James. “New Yorkers should not be asked to pay exorbitant prices just to fill their carts.”
The attorney general’s office is actively monitoring the situation and encourages any New Yorker witnessing significant price increases on eggs or poultry to report it immediately.
In a previous action, Attorney General James secured a settlement with Hillandale Farms Corporation in 2021 for illegal price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic. The settlement resulted in the distribution of 1.2 million eggs to New Yorkers.
New York law strictly prohibits businesses from selling essential goods at unconscionably high prices during emergencies. Essential goods include not only food but also water, medicine, and other necessities vital for public health and safety.
Attorney General James advises consumers reporting price gouging to provide specific details of increased prices, dates, and locations along with any receipts or photos of the advertised prices. Violations can result in penalties of up to $25,000 per instance. New Yorkers are urged to report concerns online or by calling 800-771-7755.
