CLEVELAND, OH – Eddie J. Fletcher, 39, of Cleveland, is facing a federal indictment for a string of bank robberies that terrorized Northeast Ohio throughout 2013. A grand jury returned the four-count indictment this week, alleging Fletcher’s involvement in three successful heists and one failed attempt, according to a statement released by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach.
The indictment details a brazen crime spree beginning January 10, 2013, with the robbery of a First Merit Bank branch in Streetsboro, Ohio. Fletcher allegedly didn’t slow down, hitting a Chase Bank in Cleveland on April 3, 2013, and then First Place Bank in Cleveland Heights on September 9, 2013. Each robbery followed a similar pattern: quick entry, demands for cash, and a swift exit, leaving tellers and customers shaken.
But Fletcher’s luck ran out on November 25, 2013, when he allegedly attempted to rob the same Chase Bank branch he’d successfully targeted months earlier. Details surrounding the failed attempt haven’t been released, but it led to a focused investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alongside the Streetsboro Police Department and other local agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney M. Kendra Klump is prosecuting the case, and will now bear the burden of proving Fletcher’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted on all counts, Fletcher faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence. However, Dettelbach’s office cautions that the final sentence will be determined by the court, taking into account Fletcher’s criminal history, his role in the robberies, and the specifics of each incident. The statutory maximum hasn’t been disclosed, but officials state any sentence will likely fall short of that.
This indictment is merely an accusation, and Fletcher is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He is entitled to a full and fair trial, where the government must present compelling evidence to secure a conviction. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system.
The FBI has been tight-lipped about the evidence linking Fletcher to the robberies, but sources suggest surveillance footage and witness testimonies played a key role in building the case. While local law enforcement assisted in the investigation, the FBI took the lead due to the interstate nature of the crimes and the potential for further bank robberies in neighboring states. The full extent of Fletcher’s alleged criminal enterprise remains under investigation.
