Lubbock Lockdown: Vegas Man Pleads Guilty to Flight Crew Assault

LUBBOCK, Texas – Jerry Ba Nguyen, 24, of Las Vegas, admitted in federal court today to a reckless act of disruption that forced an emergency landing of an American Airlines flight. Appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Gordon Bryant, Jr., Nguyen pleaded guilty to interference with flight crew members and attendants, a federal offense with potentially severe consequences.

Nguyen has been cooling his heels in custody since his September 2016 arrest. Now, he’s staring down the barrel of a potential 20-year federal prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. U.S. Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas announced the guilty plea, with sentencing to be determined by U.S. Senior District Judge Sam R. Cummings at a later date. This wasn’t a simple case of turbulence; it was a deliberate attempt to undermine the safety of a commercial flight.

Court documents paint a disturbing picture of Nguyen’s behavior on American Airlines flight 2542, en route from Ontario, California, to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The flight was abruptly diverted to Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport after Nguyen knowingly interfered with the crew, physically and verbally assaulting and intimidating flight attendants and crew members, and refusing to obey lawful instructions. It wasn’t a momentary lapse in judgment; the trouble began before the plane even left the gate.

Flight attendants first noticed Nguyen as he paced towards the front of the aircraft, visibly agitated. They managed to calm him down temporarily, allowing the flight to depart. But the respite was short-lived. Once airborne, Nguyen descended into a paranoid spiral, muttering about a stolen SIM card, making suicidal statements, and launching into conspiracy theories about the September 11th attacks. He repeatedly ignored requests to remain seated, prompting flight attendants to enlist the help of passengers, preparing to physically restrain him if necessary. A chilling escalation of events unfolded as the plane began its final approach.

Nguyen again moved toward the front of the aircraft, dangerously close to the cockpit door. Despite repeated warnings to remain seated for landing, he refused. Seeing a clear and present danger, the lead flight attendant signaled passengers to intervene. The Captain, with no other option, declared an emergency, diverting the flight to Lubbock. The landing was safe, and Nguyen was promptly taken into custody. This wasn’t a passenger simply being unruly; it was a direct threat to the safety of everyone on board.

The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Transportation Security Administration, the Lubbock Police Department, and the Lubbock International Airport Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Haag is leading the prosecution, ensuring that Nguyen is held accountable for his actions. This case serves as a stark reminder that interfering with a flight crew is a serious federal crime with significant penalties.
