KANSAS CITY, MO – A family’s night turned into a nightmare back in March 2020 when three masked men stormed their home on Wayne Avenue, brandishing firearms and demanding cash and drugs. Now, two of those men – Cameron E. Scott, 19, and Chase M. Murphy, 19, both of Kansas City, Missouri – are facing the music in federal court.
Federal prosecutors have slapped Scott and Murphy with a five-count criminal complaint, alleging conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery itself, brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, stealing a firearm, and possessing a stolen firearm. This isn’t Murphy’s first brush with the law; he’s already facing separate charges related to a string of business robberies.
The March 22, 2020, home invasion targeted three juveniles and four adults, holding them at gunpoint. The trio reportedly forced their way into the residence in the 8100 block of Wayne Avenue, terrorizing the family and making off with $450 in cash, a rifle, and a Taurus 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The affidavit details a brazen act of violence that left the victims shaken.
The quick getaway didn’t last. Officers spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses and initiated a pursuit. The suspects ditched the car in the 9200 block of Indiana Avenue, fleeing on foot into a nearby residence. While one suspect peeled off, Scott and Murphy were later cornered hiding in a creek bed after a foot chase near 93rd Street and Grandview Road. A search of the Indiana Avenue residence revealed a black suitcase stashed in the attic, containing the stolen Taurus 9mm, along with a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol.
This case is part of Operation LeGend, a federal initiative launched in 2020 to combat the surge in violent crime that plagued Kansas City. The operation, named in memory of four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, brought in additional federal agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Marshals Service. While the charges are serious, it’s crucial to remember that these are merely accusations at this stage. A federal trial jury will ultimately decide the guilt or innocence of Scott and Murphy.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashleigh A. Ragner is prosecuting the case, with investigation support from the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department and the FBI. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. Expect a hard fight – these are serious federal felonies carrying significant prison time.
