PROVIDENCE, RI – Michael Sellers, 40, of Providence, is headed to federal prison for nearly six years after pleading guilty to flooding the streets with deadly fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy, sends a clear message: peddling poison won’t pay.
Sellers received 70 months of incarceration, followed by five years of supervised release. He admitted to selling over 1,000 of the fake pills twice to the same individual in a matter of weeks. The transactions, far from discreet, were meticulously monitored by the FBI. Authorities were waiting in the wings, ready to intercept the lethal cargo.
According to court documents, on November 16, 2023, Sellers exchanged 1,027 fentanyl-laced pills for a cool $2,500 in cash. He repeated the same dangerous deal on November 24, 2023, again receiving $2,500 for another 1,024 pills. That’s over 2,000 potentially fatal doses hitting the streets, all for a quick five grand.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the devastating impact that fentanyl has on our communities,” stated Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom. While a statement is one thing, it’s the bars of a federal prison that truly speak to the consequences of this behavior. The feds aren’t playing games with this stuff.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Stacey A. Erickson prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on the FBI’s investigation. The Bureau’s agents were instrumental in tracking Sellers’ movements and securing the evidence needed for conviction. This was a focused operation, and it paid off.
