Armed Drug Trafficker Sentenced to 20 Years

MADISON, WI – In a shocking turn of events, Danny Turner, a 40-year-old Madison man, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in a series of armed drug trafficking offenses.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin, Turner was convicted of five counts of distributing crack cocaine and heroin, possessing a firearm as a felon, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Turner’s conviction came after a three-day trial on July 15, 2020.

During the investigation, Turner sold crack cocaine and heroin to an undercover police officer on five separate occasions in January and February of 2020. At the time of his arrest, Turner fought with the arresting officer while possessing a loaded firearm and more crack cocaine.

What’s more, Turner committed the first two drug distribution offenses while still on supervised release for his 2008 federal conviction for distribution of crack cocaine. This reckless disregard for the law earned Turner a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence under the Armed Career Criminal Act.

Additionally, Turner faced another 5-year mandatory consecutive term of imprisonment because of his conviction for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. This brings the total sentence to a staggering 20 years in federal prison.

The investigation was conducted by the Dane County Narcotics Task Force, with the prosecution of the case handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard. Turner’s lengthy sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in armed drug trafficking.

The case serves as a warning to those involved in similar crimes: the consequences of getting caught are severe and far-reaching. Turner’s 20-year sentence will undoubtedly keep him off the streets for a long time, and it’s a testament to the hard work of law enforcement and prosecutors.
