A 48-year-old Hanahan city official has been caught in a harrowing child sex trafficking scheme, using social media to target and exploit at least 19 underage victims.
Kevin Hedgpeth, a former city councilman and mayor pro tem, allegedly posed as a minor on Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Telegram, and X to pressure and pay children into making explicit videos with each other, including with family members.
He saved the files on his phone, naming the folders after the victims, and distributed them online, often to other minors, without their consent.
The victims, 13 girls and six boys, aged 12 to 17, were mostly from South Carolina, with some living in Hedgpeth’s own community.
Hedgpeth faces up to life in prison, a fine of $250,000, and lifetime supervision if convicted.
