Syracuse Gun & Drug Kingpin Gets 15 Years

SYRACUSE, NY – Uqoeon Lawrence, 29, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 180 months in federal prison last week. Lawrence, a Syracuse resident, was convicted on multiple counts related to a brazen drug and firearms operation that flooded the city’s streets with poison and illegal weapons.

The sentencing, announced by Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Bryan Miller, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), culminates a case that exposed Lawrence’s extensive involvement in drug trafficking, specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine. Lawrence didn’t just deal; he armed himself. He possessed a shotgun, readily admitting it was to protect his illicit business. The kicker? He was already a convicted felon, making firearm possession illegal in the first place.

But Lawrence’s crimes didn’t stop at personal protection. He acted as a middleman in a larger firearms trafficking scheme. He illegally received two semi-automatic pistols shipped in from Maine, then resold them to other individuals within Syracuse, further fueling the cycle of gun violence. This wasn’t simply about profit; it was about escalating danger in a city already struggling with crime.

“Uqoeon Lawrence peddled toxic drugs in Syracuse, protected his drug business with illegal firearms, and profited by pumping still more illegal guns into our community,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Sarcone. “Syracuse is safer with Lawrence behind bars, where he will remain for 15 years. My office is committed to bringing dangerous drug dealers like Lawrence to justice.” Sarcone’s words aren’t empty promises; they represent a focused effort to dismantle criminal networks operating within the city.

The investigation, a collaborative effort between ATF, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Syracuse Police Department-Intelligence Unit (SPD-INTEL), demonstrates the power of interagency cooperation. As ATF Special Agent in Charge Miller noted, “This case reflects our unwavering commitment to working alongside our law enforcement partners to protect the people of Syracuse.” The case was prosecuted by Assistance U.S. Attorney Nicolas Commandeur and retired Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Southwick.

Lawrence’s sentence isn’t just about punishing one man; it’s part of a larger strategy. The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative designed to reduce violent crime through targeted enforcement and community-based prevention programs. Chief United States District Judge Brenda K. Sannes also imposed a 5-year term of supervised release following Lawrence’s imprisonment. For more on PSN, visit https://www.justice.gov/psn. While 15 years won’t erase the damage Lawrence inflicted, it’s a solid step towards reclaiming the streets of Syracuse.
