Sean Gardner, a 39-year-old former gymnastics coach from West Des Moines, Iowa, pleaded guilty to producing child sex abuse material in a federal court in Mississippi. Gardner secretly videotaped minors changing clothes and using the bathroom at a gym in Purvis, Mississippi, where he worked as a coach. The investigation began after reports were made to the U.S. Center for SafeSport alleging Gardner’s inappropriate conduct involving minor athletes.
The investigation led to a joint effort by local and federal authorities, resulting in a search warrant being executed at Gardner’s Iowa residence. Multiple electronic devices were seized, and a forensic examination revealed numerous images and videos depicting minor children, some under the age of 12, in states of undress. The evidence included multiple files dated as early as 2017 and 2018, with several recordings made in a restroom at the Purvis gym.
The FBI has set up a website to provide resources and further information about this case for parents of children who may have been instructed by Gardner. United States Attorney J.E. Baxter Kruger stated that this is one of the most reprehensible crimes prosecuted by his office, and that justice demands the relentless pursuit of those who exploit and abuse children.
Gardner’s guilty plea is a significant step towards holding him accountable for his heinous crimes. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting suspicious activity and the need for vigilance in protecting children from abuse and exploitation.
