El Salvador National Admits Illegal Reentry in West Virginia

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — Norman Enrique Rodriguez, 37, a national of El Salvador, admitted in federal court to illegally reentering the United States, a crime that carries up to two years behind bars and a fine of $250,000.

Rodriguez pled guilty to one count of ‘Reentry of a Removed Alien,’ a charge stemming from his presence in Jefferson County, West Virginia, on January 12, 2018. He was previously removed from the U.S. in 2011 after being deemed an illegal alien — a fact he does not dispute.

The admission was made before U.S. Magistrate Robert W. Trumble, who presided over the hearing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara K. Omps-Botteicher is prosecuting the case, underscoring the federal government’s continued focus on immigration enforcement in central Appalachia.

According to court documents, Rodriguez entered the country without authorization following his 2011 removal. His reappearance in Jefferson County seven years later triggered a criminal investigation led by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

While immigration-related charges may not carry the same weight as violent felonies, they remain a federal priority. Rodriguez now faces a potential 24-month sentence, though the actual term will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, factoring in the offense’s seriousness and any prior criminal history.

The case lays bare the long reach of federal immigration enforcement, even in rural jurisdictions like Martinsburg. Sentencing is scheduled for a later date, with U.S. authorities making clear: cross the line once, and the law remembers.
