Armed Bank Robberies Rock Columbus
A Dublin man has pleaded guilty to three separate armed bank robberies in Columbus, Ohio, leaving citizens shaken and law enforcement officials determined to bring justice to the community.
Hussein A. Mohamed, 27, pleaded guilty to three counts of committing bank robbery, three counts of conspiring to commit bank robbery, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, in U.S. District Court on April 11, 2024.
Between April 11, 2024 and April 16, 2024, Mohamed robbed three banks in Columbus, Ohio: Telhio Credit Union on North Hamilton Road, Fifth Third Bank on Bethel Road, and Huntington Bank on North High Street. He wore different disguises during each robbery, including a dark Patagonia sweatshirt, red sweatshirt, and black winter hat, and showed bank tellers a note on his cell phone demanding cash and indicating he had a gun.
Law enforcement officials recovered the clothing Mohamed wore at each robbery, a loaded handgun, Mohamed’s wallet, and identification at an apartment on Merriwick Crossing Drive in Columbus. He was arrested in May 2024.
Bank robbery is a federal crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Conspiring to commit bank robbery carries a potential maximum penalty of five years in prison. Brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence is punishable by a mandatory seven years and up to life in prison, to run consecutively to any other sentence imposed. In this case, Mohamed faces up to 44 years in prison.
Kelly A. Norris, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, and Elena Iatarola, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cincinnati Division, announced the guilty plea entered today before U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson. Assistant United States Attorneys Damoun Delaviz and Elizabeth A. Geraghty are representing the United States in this case.
