New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office has dropped a bombshell in the investigation surrounding the tragic death of John Bonds, revealing chilling security camera footage from the night he was struck by a car driven by an off-duty Colonie Police Department (CPD) officer.
Attorney General Letitia James directed the release of the footage obtained as part of an ongoing probe into the incident that occurred on May 27, 2025. The footage comes from two nearby security cameras and was released to bolster transparency and public trust in the investigation process.
The incident transpired shortly after midnight when Bonds, a pedestrian, was struck by a car on Old Loudon Road in Latham. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on June 2, 2025.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is mandated to assess any incident involving police officers or peace officers that may have caused a death by act or omission. This law applies regardless of whether an officer was on-duty or off-duty and irrespective of the decedent’s status.
It is crucial to note that the release of this footage does not imply any opinion on the guilt or innocence of anyone involved in the criminal matter. The Attorney General’s Office maintains strict adherence to the rule of law, and charges will be pursued if evidence warrants it.
