Mary Holden Ayala, Foster Care Embezzlement, Oregon 2024

PORTLAND, Ore. – The grim details of a financial betrayal have emerged as Mary Holden Ayala, 56, has been formally charged with embezzling over $800,000 from the Oregon foster care agency she once led. The accused, who served as President and Executive Director of Give Us This Day (GUTD), is alleged to have siphoned funds intended for children and families in dire need.

According to a federal indictment, between 2009 and 2015, Ayala is accused of embezzling at least $800,000. The charges also include filing false personal income tax returns for the years 2009 through 2014, with a failure to file a return in 2015.

The FBI nabbed Ayala on May 9, 2017, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she appeared before a Magistrate Judge. The government is seeking detention due to the risk of her not appearing in Oregon if released. Currently, Ayala remains in federal custody awaiting the outcome of her hearing.

It’s important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Ayala is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This investigation was a joint effort by the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations.

A copy of the indictment has been appended as an attachment to this release, serving as a stark reminder of the corruption that can lurk behind the facade of charitable endeavors.
