A Bedford woman has copped a slap-on-the-wrist probation sentence for her role in a months-long scheme to push dangerous prescription pills across western Pennsylvania. Damaris Rispoli, 56, of Bedford, Pa., was sentenced to one year of federal probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute, possess with intent to distribute, and actual distribution of multiple Schedule IV controlled substances, federal prosecutors confirmed today.
The charges stem from a sordid drug ring that pulsed from August 2014 through May 20, 2015, during which Rispoli allegedly conspired with at least one other individual to flood local streets with Tramadol, Zolpidem, Clonazepam, Lorazepam, and Carisoprodol — all potent sedatives and muscle relaxants commonly abused for their narcotic effects. On or about May 20, 2015, Rispoli was caught in possession of Carisoprodol with clear intent to distribute, while also dumping quantities of the other drugs into the illicit market.
The case was adjudicated in federal court in Johnstown before U.S. District Judge Kim R. Gibson, who handed down the one-year probation term without incarceration. No fines or restitution were announced, raising eyebrows among law enforcement insiders familiar with the case’s scope and duration.
Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr. led the prosecution, framing the operation as a calculated effort to exploit the region’s opioid crisis. Despite the non-custodial outcome, prosecutors emphasized that the conviction sends a message: even behind-the-scenes players in the drug trade will face federal scrutiny.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security, whose agents spent months tracking the flow of diverted pharmaceuticals and identifying key figures in the distribution chain. U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady praised the agency’s persistence, calling the takedown a win for community safety in a region ravaged by prescription drug abuse.
Rispoli’s name now joins a growing list of central Pennsylvania residents entangled in the federal crosshairs of the opioid epidemic. While some may question the leniency of probation, the conviction stands as a formal mark of guilt in a case rooted in the dangerous trade of legal pills turned street poison.
