Redlands Man Arrested on Firearms Charges

RIVERSIDE, California – A Redlands man has been arrested and charged with dealing firearms without a license in federal court. Scott Everett Coyl, 28, of Redlands, was taken into custody without incident at his residence yesterday morning.

According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Coyl allegedly sold five .223-caliber AR-type rifles, built from unfinished lower receivers, to a person he believed was a convicted felon. The purchaser of the rifles told Coyl he had a criminal record and was buying them to send to Mexico for use in shootings.

Coyl continued selling firearms to the individual despite learning of this information. The ATF and Redlands Police Department seized over 40 firearms, including three machine guns and eight silencers, as well as more than 100 high-capacity magazines and ammunition from Coyl’s residence.

The affidavit alleges Coyl built AR-type rifles by machining out the lower receiver and adding parts to make a complete firearm. He sold these firearms out of his garage in his residence. Coyl even told the person he thought was a convicted felon that he could manufacture and sell fully automatic rifles.

Coyl was released on a $20,000 bond following his initial appearance in United States District Court yesterday afternoon. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 13 and an arraignment for April 19.

If convicted of dealing firearms without a license, Coyl faces a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison. The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with the assistance of the Redlands Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Bilal A. Essayli will be prosecuting the case.
