New Bedford Man Busted for Child Pornography

BOSTON — In a grim turn of events, 41-year-old Robert David Austin from New Bedford found himself in the clink yesterday after being arrested on child exploitation charges. The allegations against Austin are nothing short of chilling.

According to federal prosecutors, Austin is accused of receiving and possessing child pornography, engaging in activities on a messenger application where such graphic material is traded. A search of his residence yielded child pornographic content stored on his cell phone, leading to the grim revelation that he was actively participating in the dissemination of such grotesque images.

The charges against Austin are severe: He faces up to 20 years in prison for possession and a staggering 20 years if convicted of receiving child pornography. The potential fines are equally daunting—up to $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

The arrest is part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative aimed at protecting children from exploitation and abuse. Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Mackenzie Duane is leading the prosecution against Austin, with support from Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell and Homeland Security Investigations in Boston.

For those who wish to report information or voice concerns regarding this case, a dedicated hotline has been established at 617-748-3274.

Austin is currently detained pending his detention hearing scheduled for today at 3 p.m. The grim details of the charging document serve as stark allegations against him, who remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
