Willard Tanton and Thompson Face Firebombing Charges

Two residents of Montgomery County have been hit with heavy charges in the wake of a brutal attack on the Huyen Trang Buddhist Meditation Center. Austin Willard Tanton, 28, and Kayla Lynn Thompson, 31, are staring down federal charges for their alleged role in the fiery assault.

The duo is accused of conspiracy to commit malicious use of explosive materials, as well as using explosive materials to commit a felony. Tanton faces an additional charge of possession of an unregistered destructive device, setting the stage for a grueling legal battle ahead.

According to authorities, Tanton was the alleged thrower of a Molotov cocktail through the temple’s window, leading to a fire that damaged property and caused temporary closure. The Southern District of Texas is on high alert, with U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei vowing to protect religious freedoms in the community.

“No one should fear being attacked in their house of worship,” Ganjei stated. “The Southern District will continue working with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable those who seek to spread fear and violence through acts of hate or intimidation.”

The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI, ATF, and Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennifer Weinhold and Anthony Franklyn leading the prosecution.

Both Tanton and Thompson face up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the conspiracy charges, with additional penalties for Tanton on the possession charge. The case serves as a stark reminder that the right to practice one’s faith without fear is a cornerstone of American democracy.
